Emily Morden (Candy) was raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. She is a graduate of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for Music and Art and the Performing Arts where she studied drama for four years. Emily’s theater credits include Counsellor at Law (Dorothy Dwight), and I Never Saw Another Butterfly. Emily’s film and television credits include One Life to Live (Liz), Done to Death (Hope), and an Obama promo directed by Doug Liman (Swingers, The Bourne Identity). For her first film, Emily couldn’t feel luckier to be a part of such an amazing, profound project. Thank you so much to Lauren, Jeff, Brigitte, Ian, Laura, Tophy, Steph and everyone on set who made this film such an incredible experience. Thank you to our brave soldiers and the real Eddie Van Buren for his inspiration. And most of all, thank you mom and dad for all your support, belief, and love.
Lauren Wolkstein (director) was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland by her mother, a schoolteacher, and her father, a colonel in the Air Force who served in several wars, including the Gulf War and the current Iraq War. Lauren received her B.A. in computer science from Duke University and won the Duke Undergraduate Filmmaker Award. Lauren lived in Los Angeles for a year assisting film producer Chris Hanley at Muse Productions (The Virgin Suicides, American Psycho, Buffalo '66). She is one of the recipients of the 2007 Lifetime Movie Network Student Filmmaker Award for her first short film at Columbia, We Three. Her last short film, Dandelion Fall, won awards at several film festivals last year and was picked up for distribution by Wolfe Releasing. Lauren will graduate from Columbia University's School of the Arts in May 2010 with an M.F.A. in Film Directing. Brigitte Liebowitz (producer) received the RHI Entertainment Producers Development Award for Cigarette Candy, and the film is fiscally sponsored by IFP. Lauren is currently writing and developing two feature films.
Jeffrey Sousa (writer) grew up in the suburbs of Massachusetts before spending a year abroad in Spain in high school. After that he studied philosophy at the University of Chicago. He’s worked as a translator, interpreter, and elementary school teacher in rural Japan where his short Souseki’s Third Dream won Best Film at the Aomori Independent Film Festival. Jeff now attends Film School at Columbia University and resides in Brooklyn where he writes full time.

Brigitte Liebowitz (producer) completed her undergraduate work at the University of Southern California with a major in Writing for Screen and Television. Before coming to Columbia University, Brigitte worked for the American Film Institute with the Directing Workshop for Women as a production coordinator and a production manager. Brigitte became attracted to Cigarette Candy because of the unique angle taken in telling a story of war and homecoming, adolescence and adult hood, and the delicate space between the two. For her work as a producer in the development process of Cigarette Candy, Brigitte was awarded the RHI Producer’s Development Award at the 2008 Columbia University Film Festival , endowing the project with funds to make this film. Brigitte has been awarded the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts Grant, The Marguerite Roberts Scholarship for Screenwriting, a J.Paul Getty Grant for Multiculturalism in the Arts, and a Producing Fellowship at Columbia University.
